Jill Callaway : Shays service record overstated
[Letter to the Redding Pilot--June 8, 2008]
Two recent letters to the Redding Pilot praised Christopher Shays for his service in the Peace Corps during the Vietnam War. One of the letters states that it is “smear tactics” to point out that Shays’ service was an alternative to accepting the draft. Stating simple facts, albeit inconvenient, are now attacked instead of being acknowledged as part of the official record.
The key point is not complicated. Shays, who refused to serve in the unpopular Vietnam war was an outspoken supporter of the Iraq war and helped send this generation of young people to another unpopular war. Contrary to current campaign posturing Chris Shays is so part of George Bush’s administration that he kissed the President of the United States on the Presidents entry into the Congress for his recent State of the Union address.
We are asked to again send this professional politician to represent us. His character and values are determined by what he does. These are troubling acts that voters need to know and evaluate.
Sincerely,
Jill Callaway, Sanfordtown Road
